Difficult conditions in Finland
The reduced EU prices hit Finnish beet growing particularly hard, as growth conditions in the country are less favourable. As from 2007 we assess the beet supply to justify production at only one of the two existing sugar factories in Finland. As a result, the factory in Salo was closed after the 2006 campaign, and 56,000 tonnes of the Finnish quota was sold to the European Commission under the Restructuring Fund.

History
The Salo beet sugar factory was established in 1918 and has played an import role for the Salo community ever since. Much later the electronics industry has grown into a large player and nowadays Salo is known both for its sugar beet plant and its electronics industry.
Sugar production ceased in Salo after the beet campaign 2006.
