The site

Danisco Sugar Nakskov is one of our largest beet sugar facilities.

The sugar beets are supplied by approx. 1,500 beet growers and conveyed to the site by lorry or tractor. Around 600 truckloads a day, equal to approx. 1.2 million tonnes of sugar beet, are turned into sugar during a campaign. From the beet fibres left over once the sugar has been extracted, we produce feed products.

Danisco's entire annual sugar production is achieved during a three-month period, called the campaign, extending over some 100 days from end-September into January when the facility operates around the clock, seven days a week. The facility has a daily processing capacity of 12,000 tonnes of beet.

The site produces annually (approximately):

  • 198,500 tonnes of sugar (2007/08)
    Feed products:
  • 40,000 tonnes of molasses (2007/08)
  • 64,000 tonnes of unmolassed sugar beet pellets (2007/08)

The sugar produced in Nakskov is sold and supplied to the food industry.

The site employs around 200 people, but the workforce is expanded by a contingent labour force of 40 people during the beet campaign. The majority of our employees work in the production e.g. as machine operators, process operators, service engineers (within electrical maintenance or automation) and in the laboratory. Between the campaigns
Once the campaign is over, the production equipment is overhauled. The maintenance and new installations required after the campaign keep the permanent staff not engaged in the packing and handling of sugar and feed products busy for the rest of the year. This is also the time of the year when the staff receive further training.

History
Danisco Sugar Nakskov was founded in 1882. At the time, the factory had a processing capacity of 300 tonnes of beet each 24-hour working day and was one of the largest sugar factories in Northern Europe.

When the factory started, sugar production amounted to 24 tonnes/day. One hundred years later it was closer to 1,400 tonnes. Since then, capacity has gradually been expanded and by the end-1980s, for instance, expansion was carried out to cope with 10,000 tonnes of beet a day.

Local community & environment
Nakskov is located in the western part of the island of Lolland in southern Denmark. The community has approximately 15,300 inhabitants. Danisco Sugar is one of the biggest employers in Nakskov and good relations with the local community are fundamental to us.

We are in continuous dialogue with local stakeholders with regard to issues of common concern. This includes communicating with the local politicians and committees on environmental and technical matters. It also involves interaction with the local residents, for example by inviting the nearby villages to visit and experience the site from the inside which we do every year.

Being a major sugar-producing facility there is widespread interest in visiting us and studying our production process. During the campaign we have approximately 1,000 visitors coming from a range of areas e.g. schools, universities, grower organisations and politicians. If you are interested in visiting Nakskov please send a request via e-mail or give us a call. Our visiting time is normally in November.
