Ascorbic acid

Genencor and Eastman Chemical have developed a revolutionary process for making ascorbic acid (vitamin C) from glucose, a refined product of corn.

This process combines the best of chemistry and biotechnology and signals a major breakthrough in the development of chemicals from corn.

Using renewable raw materials - and our expertise in pathway engineering - eliminates several chemical steps in the production of vitamin C. This process results in higher yields and significantly lower production costs.

The tip of the iceberg

The implications of this technological breakthrough go far beyond vitamin C. We built a pathway to ascorbic acid, but have the ability to modify that pathway to synthesize a wide variety of additional products.
