X-ray crystallography

Examples

Using structural imaging tools, Genencor has gained significant understanding of protein folds, as well as modifications that proteins undergo after initial formation.

Using tools such as x-ray crystallography, Genencor has identified a large number of structures for different enzymes including proteases, lipases, amylases, and cellulases, some at ultra-high (0.78 Å) resolution.

Modifying structure to affect function

This detailed understanding gives our scientists profound insights and enables them to modify lead enzyme structures to produce industrial proteins with exact characteristics.

For example, we have produced alpha-amylases with increased stability, altered calcium-binding properties, and improved performance in low-pH conditions.
