The challenge isn’t to stop using tires, or buying clothes – rather, it’s about developing alternative, more sustainable ingredients from which to produce the products we rely on.

A large part of the world has become dependent on automobiles and, as a result, relies on tires – which are partially made from petroleum-based synthetic rubber. To address this challenge, Genencor has entered into a  research collaboration with The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, which is focused on developing an alternative to petroleum-based isoprene: BioIsopreneTM monomer.

Our collaboration is geared at creating an alternative that is made from renewable raw materials from agriculture, providing a consistent supply that is not subject to fluctuating oil prices, and further reduces our dependence on fossil fuels. BioIsopreneTM technology can also be used in other applications, including adhesives, surgical gloves—even golf balls.

In the textiles industry, techniques like fabric bleaching, preparation, and denim stonewashing often require a multi-step process that utilizes high temperatures and pH levels.  In response to this challenge, Genencor’s line of PrimaGreen® enzymes lower water and energy consumption, and are more effective in milder processing conditions, resulting in reduced CO2 equivalent emissions.

These products are designed to give textile processors and fashion brands a more sustainable processing alternative, while providing more flexibility in fashion design.
